"The heresy of one age becomes the orthodoxy of the next." (Helen Keller, 1903)
We will be exploring the heresy of Marcionism this Sunday, named for the first century Christian leader Marcion of Sinope (pictured above, right). Marcion was instrumental in the development of the New Testament canon we have inherited. Marcion read some of the early teachings of Jesus but thought them to be incompatible with the God he saw in the Old Testament. To combat these incompatibilities, Marcion developed his own canon, consisting of 11 books, some heavily edited to support his understanding of God.
Others have followed Marcion's lead and created their own canon, dispensing parts of scripture with which they didn't agree. But have many of us not done the same, dismissing parts of scripture we don't like while giving an awful lot of weight to the parts that support what we already think? Join us Sunday as we learn about Marcion through the lens of 2 Timothy 3:10-17.
