"The heresy of one age becomes the orthodoxy of the next." (Helen Keller, 1903)

Marcion

Heresies of the Early Church continues this Sunday as we meet Montanus. Montanus was a self-proclaimed prophet near the end of the 2nd century. He believed the Holy Spirit gave new prophecies and direction to the church through him, as well as two women, Priscilla and Maximilla. Montanist worship services often consisted of prophetic visions from leaders and members of the congregations, and they believed in an ascetic life for followers of Christ. One of the more prolific of the early church fathers (called the Patristics) was named Tertullian (pictured above), and in the process of writing against the Montanists, he eventually converted and began defending them.

Although the Bishop of Rome (what we call the Pope today) condemned the Montanists as heretics and they eventually died out around the early 6th century, some modern day Pentecostals look to Montanus and his followers as the early ancestors of their own Spirit-led practice of faith. Join us this Sunday as we learn about Montanus through the lens of Matthew 21:23-27.
