Council of Nicea
Heresies of the Early Church wraps up this Sunday as we look at the final product of these early disputes - the statement of belief that we now call the Nicene Creed (and to a lesser extent, the older Apostles' Creed). This Sunday is also Trinity Sunday on the liturgical calendar, the one and only day set aside to celebrate a church doctrine--the doctrine hammered out at the councils of Nicea (325 AD) and Constantinople (381 AD).
I grew up saying one of these two ecumenical creeds every Sunday in church, eventually memorizing them both by repetition. But just knowing the words does not necessarily do justice to the centuries of struggle that went into forming and shaping these statements of faith that have now endured, largely unchanged, for nearly 1700 years, and are used today by Christians of hundreds of different denominations around the world.
So please join us this Sunday as we wrap up this series on the Heresies of the Early Church, celebrate Trinity Sunday, and enjoy fellowship and nature with our annual spring picnic, all this coming Sunday 22 May, beginning at 11:00. Our Bible text for this Sunday will be Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31 and John 16:12-15.
